Choosing tyres for Kenyan roads

Kenyan roads punish tyres in three specific ways

First, impact. Potholes and unmarked bumps hit the sidewall hard, which is why very low-profile tyres struggle here and why casing strength matters more than tread pattern for most drivers.

Second, water. During the long rains, standing water on tarmac makes wet braking and aquaplaning resistance the most valuable single specification you can buy.

Third, heat and load. Sustained highway running on Mombasa Road or the Northern Corridor builds heat, and heat is what destroys under-inflated or under-rated tyres.

What that means when you shop

Prioritise wet grip and casing strength over aggressive-looking tread. Most Nairobi drivers would be better served by a good highway tyre than by the all-terrain they think they need.

Check the load index against how you actually use the car. A family of five plus luggage to Naivasha is a real load, and a tyre at its limit runs hot.

Buy the correct speed rating. Downgrading to save money is a false economy that shows up as heat damage.

Where budget makes sense and where it does not

On a small town car doing 8,000km a year, a well-made budget tyre is perfectly reasonable. On a loaded 4x4 doing highway distance, cheap casings are the wrong place to save.
