SUV tyre buying guide for Kenya

Prado, Harrier, X-Trail, CR-V and Fortuner — what to fit, what to avoid and what the salesman will not tell you.

Written by the Jasyle workshop team Nairobi, KenyaUpdated 2026

Start with load, not looks

An SUV loaded with five people and luggage is a heavy vehicle. Load index is the first specification to check, and it is the one most commonly compromised when people chase a price.

Never fit below the placard load index. If you tow or carry roof loads regularly, go one step above.

Then decide highway or all-terrain

A Harrier that never leaves tarmac wants a quiet highway tyre. A Prado that goes to a farm every weekend wants an all-terrain. Fitting the wrong one is the most common expensive mistake in this category.

Noise rating is worth asking about specifically. On a large SUV cabin, tyre roar is the dominant sound at highway speed.

Sizes we stock deepest

225/65R17, 265/65R17, 265/60R18, 235/60R18, 215/65R16 and 245/70R16 cover most of the Kenyan SUV parc, and we hold multiple tiers in each.

If your size is unusual, tell us early. Most fitments we can have in the shop within 24 to 48 hours.

If any of this raises a question about your own car, bring it in. The tyre safety check is free and takes ten minutes, and we will give you a written summary whether or not you buy anything.
Thanks. Your details are with us and WhatsApp is opening so we can reply immediately.
