Cutting fleet tyre costs without cutting corners

How Kenyan fleet managers can lower cost-per-kilometre through pressure discipline, rotation, position matching and retreading.

Written by the Jasyle workshop team Nairobi, KenyaUpdated 2026

Measure cost per kilometre, not price per tyre

The cheapest tyre is rarely the cheapest kilometre. A KSh 42,000 casing that runs 90,000km and retreads twice beats a KSh 30,000 casing that runs 45,000km and scraps.

Log the fitting date, odometer and removal odometer per wheel position. Within one cycle you will know which brands actually pay on your routes.

Pressure discipline is the biggest single lever

Under-inflation is the leading cause of premature commercial tyre failure. A weekly check across the fleet costs almost nothing and routinely adds 15–20% to casing life.

Fit the same valve caps across the fleet so drivers can see at a glance when something has been touched.

Match the tyre to the axle position

Steer, drive and trailer positions have different demands. Fitting a drive pattern on a steer axle wears it irregularly and hurts steering feel.

We supply position-correct patterns and will map your fleet's requirement by route and load if you want the exercise done properly.

If any of this raises a question about your own car, bring it in. The tyre safety check is free and takes ten minutes, and we will give you a written summary whether or not you buy anything.
